KILIMANJARO TREKKING

6 Days Kilimanjaro Machame Route Trekking

The Machame Route in summary

A popular Kilimanjaro trail is the Machame route, sometimes called the Whiskey Route. It is among the most well-liked routes up Mount Kilimanjaro. There are two versions of the Machame route: a 6-day version and a 7-day one. The latter has a considerably higher summit success rate and acclimatization profile. Even novices may enjoy the breathtaking vistas of Machame 7. Hiking Kilimanjaro’s five climatic zones, scaling the stunning Barranco Wall, and taking in the strange-looking Dendrosenecio Kilimanjari are all enjoyable experiences. – truly unique plants that are not found anywhere else in the world.

Machame Route: Professional Guidance

When deciding between the 6- and 7-day Machame route itineraries, exercise caution. The 6-day version is only appropriate for seasoned hikers or those who have already acclimated to the altitude and have substantially lower summit success percentages. This is due to the fact that the shortened route omits the intermediate stay at Karanga Camp, which increases the difficulty of adequately acclimating to the high altitude and increases the likelihood of summiting. “Budget” tour providers frequently advertise this option, but we don’t advise novices to take it.

6 Days Machame Route - Summit Success Rate

The success rates of each Kilimanjaro route to the summit are of interest to many travelers. Since 2017, Jairos Adventure has started gathering precise data from our Mount Kilimanjaro summits. The success rates of our Machame route excursions at the summit are as follows:
Crater Rim of Machame 6: 92.0%; Uhuru Peak: 87.3%

Safari Overview

Select a Machame Route and begin an unforgettable adventure to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak. On this demanding yet rewarding hike, you will go through verdant rainforests, varied ecosystems, and high-altitude terrain. For those looking to summit Uhuru Peak, the Machame Route provides an exhilarating trip with meticulously thought-out acclimatization and stunning views.

The Machame, known as the Whiskey Route, is a classic Kilimanjaro trail. It’s one of the most popular routes to climb Kilimanjaro. We at Jairos Adventure organize several expeditions annually along this trail that starts in a beautiful tropical forest.

The Machame route is available in 6- and 7-day variations, with the second offering a significantly better acclimatization profile and summit success rate. Machame 7 is a great route with amazing views suitable even for beginners.

You will enjoy hiking through all five climatic zones of Kilimanjaro, scale the picturesque Barranco Wall, and marvel at the alien-looking Dendrosenecio Kilimanjaro – truly unique plants that are not found anywhere else in the world.

Day 1 | Machame Gate - Machame Camp

The exciting trek from Machame Gate to Machame Camp begins on Day 1 of the Machame Route on Mount Kilimanjaro. Hikers start at the 1,800-meter Machame Gate, where a 10-kilometer trail leads through a lush, green jungle. This initial stretch is characterized by a thick canopy of old trees, bright mosses, and various unusual plants and animals.

As the trail ascends, the air becomes colder, and the greenery begins to thin. Along the way, hikers catch glimpses of Kilimanjaro’s spectacular slopes. The path winds higher, revealing breathtaking views of the mountain’s grandeur.

After 5-7 hours of challenging trekking, climbers reach Machame Camp, situated at 2,835 meters. The camp is nestled in a clearing with a clear view of the surrounding forest and the towering peak above. Here, hikers prepare for their first night on the mountain, celebrating their progress and enjoying the serene beauty of their high-altitude surroundings.

Day 2 | Machame Camp - Shira Camp

The journey from Machame Camp to Shira Camp on Day 2 of the Machame Route starts with a slow climb through the woodland. This eventually gives way to a heath zone with unusual flora, including huge heathers and lobelias. As the route gets closer to the Shira Plateau, it gets steeper and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding scenery.

Trekkers should expect to spend 5–6 hours on this portion of the ascent, reaching an elevation of around 3,840 meters (12,600 feet) before they arrive at Shira Camp. The camp itself is situated on a stunning, broad plateau that offers sweeping views of Kilimanjaro’s summit and is a great place to acclimate.

Trekkers may relax, acclimate, and take in the gorgeous surroundings here while getting ready for the following day’s adventure.

Kilimanjaro

Day 3 | Shira Camp - Lava Tower - Barranco Camp

On Day 3, one of the most important days for acclimatization on Mount Kilimanjaro is the hike from Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower. From the Shira Plateau, the road progressively climbs through the area of moorland with its limited flora, ultimately leading to the striking Lava Tower at 4,630 meters (15,190 feet).

Trekkers enter the picturesque Barranco Valley, surrounded by imposing cliffs and studded with enormous senecios and lobelias, after climbing the tower. Climbers can better acclimate to the altitude and increase their chances of success in the coming days by descending to Barranco Camp, which is located at 3,960 meters (12,990 ft).

This portion of the voyage, with its steep climb and subsequent fall, not only puts your physical stamina to the test but also gets your body ready for the next higher heights.

Day 4 | Barranco Camp - Barafu Camp

The hike from Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp on Day 4 is one of the most exciting and important portions of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. The day starts with the intimidating Barranco Wall, a rocky, steep elevation that, once scaled, demands some minor scrambling and provides amazing views of the surrounding area.

The trail passes through the picturesque Karanga Valley, which is made up of undulating hills and abundant greenery, after the wall. This portion of the trip is comparatively simpler, giving hikers a chance to regain their breath and see the mountain’s grandeur. The landscape gets increasingly rocky and arid as the hike goes on, with fewer flora and an increased altitude.

Situated on a windy, narrow slope, the final hike to Barafu Camp is demanding but worthwhile. Barafu Camp, located at a height of 4,673 meters (15,331 feet), is the base camp for the last push towards the summit. In order to prepare for the early morning journey to Uhuru Peak, trekkers utilize the day to relax and acclimate. This day is significant in the Kilimanjaro expedition because of the untamed beauty of Barafu Camp and the excitement surrounding the impending summit attempt.

Rongai Route

Day 5 | Uhuru Peak - Millennium Camp

It’s a lengthy walk on Day 5 from Uhuru Peak to Millennium Camp. Following the exciting but difficult climb to 5,895-meter-high Uhuru Peak, the journey back down starts with a retrace of steps to Stella Point and then a continuation around the crater rim.

Tired legs must negotiate rough scree and steep trails on the descent to Barafu Camp, which is an endurance challenge. After passing through an area of alpine dryness, the route finally descends to the rich moorland vegetation.

At 3,820 meters, climbers find a warm place to rest and recover at Millennium Camp. Surrounded by colorful flora and the sounds of far-off wildlife, it’s a stark yet lovely contrast to the bleak peak they scaled earlier in the day.

Rongai Route

Day 6 | Millennium Camp - Mweka Gate

The last part of your amazing Kilimanjaro adventure starts at Millennium Camp on Day 6 and descends to Mweka Gate. The shift in view as you make your way down through the lush, colorful rainforest is revitalizing and refreshing, and the sound of the rustling leaves and the sounds of wildlife provide a calming backdrop.

After the strenuous physical ascent, the primarily downhill and clearly marked track makes for a relaxing and contemplative stroll. You’ll finish your journey at Mweka Gate, where your summit certificates will be given to you as a symbol of your tenacity and resolve.

This is a time to celebrate not only reaching the summit but the full journey—from planning to the friendships formed along the way.
